The University conducts and develops scientific activities related to aviation in three scientific disciplines: mechanical engineering, civil engineering and transport as well as safety sciences. The University owns twenty-five well-equipped laboratories.

The scientific activity of the University is closely related to broadly understood aviation and together with the Ministry of National Defence has an influence on the creation of research issues important for the development of the Armed Forces. Scientific teams using the scientific potential of the University staff and laboratories are currently conducting scientific research in the following thematic areas:

  • aircraft design and operation
  • aviation drives,
  • aerodynamics,
  • satellite techniques,
  • satellite navigation,
  • aviation meteorology,
  • air transport,
  • aviation safety,
  • human factor in aviation,
  • state defence,
  • social aspects of national security.

In addition, on the basis of well-developed simulator base, other prospective research directions, such as:

  • virtual reality in the pilot training process,
  • human-machine cooperation issues,
  • artificial intelligence in control of unmanned aerial vehicles, are performed.

The University supports participation in R&D projects, both departmental, national and international. The University staff conducting scientific activity broadly cooperates with other national and worldwide research centers dealing with similar research issues.  The University staff is engaged in cooperation with the Aircraft Accident Investigation Commissions and other institutions dealing with the
flight safety.

 

FACULTY OF AVIATION

The staff of the faculty conduct research on thematic areas concerning construction and operations within aviation technology. Basic research focuses on solving issues connected with the construction and operation of devices and systems equipping aircraft, as well as the construction and operation of aircraft on the ground and in-flight.

  • psychophysical characteristics of flight personnel,
  • aircraft power supply systems,
  • operation, production and properties of fibre-reinforced polymer composite materials,
  • use of an augmented reality environment in the training of aviation personnel,
  • production and appliance of modern teaching aids in teaching and training
  • simulation of the operation of automation elements in the Matlab/Simulink environment,
  • design, manufacture and testing of passive microwave components,
  • construction and design of UAV systems.

 

FACULTY OF AVIATION SAFETY

Faculty of Aviation Safety has more than thirty highly qualified lecturers who demonstrate excellent practical and military background, and they conduct research projects within an extensive area of safety and security studies with
a particular attention to aviation and air transport.

Department of Aviation Safety and Security Studies conducts research in:

  • sociological, economic, philosophical, and legal aspects of national security,
  • national security systems and strategy,
  • terrorism,
  • history and law of armed conflicts,
  • current and future warfare,
  • air force in future armed conflicts,
  • air defence,
  • cybersecurity,
  • the use of armed force in crisis situations,
  • leadership and command in air force,
  • the use of weapons of mass destruction in future conflicts,
  • military doctrines and allies,
  • host nation support,
  • law of armed conflicts.

Department of Aviation Transport Safety and Security conducts research in:

  • aviation psychology,
  • crew resource management,
  • aviation teaching and training,
  • pilot’s psychophysics and its development,
  • pilot’s survival in enemy territory,
  • threats to air transport security,
  • air traffic management,
  • flight safety,
  • protection and defence of air bases and airports,
  • crisis management in aviation organizations,
  • aeronautical rescue,
  • operation of airports,
  • security management in aviation,
  • aviation law and policies,
  • operation of state and civil aviation.

 

INSTITUTE OF NAVIGATION 

The scientific research activity of the institute includes areas related to satellite navigation systems (GNSS), geographical information systems (GIS), flight safety, air navigation, geodesy and combat use of aviation in the navigation aspect.
Basic research focuses on solving problems related to positioning of objects using satellite techniques, the use of modern satellite technology in civil and military aviation, navigation of aircraft and land objects, airport navigation infrastructure, navigation systems, the use of airspace by military and civil aviation, exploitation
of navigation devices and systems.

 

DEPARTMENT OF GENERAL EDUCATION 

The research comprises the following areas of the Polish and world history:

  • 19th and 20th military history;
  • guerrilla organizations in Lubelskie district during World War II;
  • techniques and armament used in armed conflicts of 19th and 20th century;
  • war veterans and combatants as a social phenomenon;
  • the military’s mentality and its change;
  • everyday life in 20th century;
  • history of the interwar Polish diplomacy;
  • interwar Poland’s secret intelligence;
  • higher education in the Polish People’s Republic (PRL);
  • Polish squirearchy in 20th century.

 

The Section of Applied SciencesScientific conducts research in the following:

  • testing the reliability of technical objects with the use of mathematical models,
  • statistical analysis of aviation related problems,
  • numerical fluid mechanics,
  • application of solid state physics in technical problems in aviation,
  • analysis of the trends in passenger aviation transport in Europe.
